Dublin ZooIreland Revealed

Dublin Zoo, the tour for this great zoo starts in the Phoenix park Dublin 8. Dublin zoo, which is one of the worlds oldest zoos, opened on September the 1st 1831 and measures 28 hectares in size and attracts almost a million visitors each year.

Types Of Animals

It is home to over 400 animals, which include mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. Mammals are animals with fur that covers most of the skin, and they are the only animals that can produce milk, they are also warm blooded like birds.

Birds

There are many types of birds and most of them are covered with feathers, although some species of birds such as penguins have shorter feathers which are more waterproof. Most birds can fly but some such as the penguin, emu, and the ostrich are flightless.

Reptiles

Reptiles are cold blooded and have scales or a dry scaly skin. The different types of reptiles are as follows: Snakes, lizards, turtles, tortoises, crocodiles and alligators. They are all born or hatch out of eggs. Some of them mainly stay in water but need to move onto land to warm up because they are cold blooded. They need to reheat and you can see them sunning themselves on rocks. Snakes and small lizards often use trees and small ledges etc.

Dublin Zoo African Savanna

The African Savanna is a great way to see the amazing wildlife, such as giraffes, zebras and rhinos, to name just a few. You will be entertained watching the antics of the chimpanzees as they play. With its open plains and grassy savanna, its like walking through an African safari.

They can all be seen at Dublin Zoo and if you are there at the right time, you might even see the Zoo keepers feeding the animals, which would be nice for some photographs. For more information about opening times and admission fees see the official Dublin Zoo website.
