Newgrange County Meath
Newgrange this historical landmark was built over 5000 years ago (about 3,200 B.C.). It is older than Stonehenge in England and the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt.

It is situated in the Boyne Valley and was built by the farming community that resided there.

Newgrange was classified by archaeologists as a passage tomb but Ancient Temple is a more fitting description as it is a place of astrological, spiritual, religious and ceremonial importance.

Illumination Of The Chamber Winter Solstice

Every year during the Winter solstice, its passage and chamber are illuminated by the sun which shines at dawn, beginning at around 9am, through an opening above the entrance to the passage called a roof-box.

This event lasts for seventeen minutes and happens from December 19th to 23rd.
